7 Quick Takes Friday (Vol 108)

I have a sneaking suspicion I have perhaps been over-reading on my ereader (Kobo touch). This occurred to me whilst I was reading a book, the old-fashioned kind with paper pages, I had been endeavouring for several seconds to turn the page, growing more frustrated when the page didn't turn. It took awhile to realise I had to manually turn the page, touching wasn't going to work.

Pondering the purpose of education as we help guide our older children on their journey and visualise the upcoming year for our younger ones. How do we select what is important to learn and what is not so relevant? How do we decide the must have skills and the bonuses? For every family this answer will differ, ultimately it will be answered by family philosophy and culture.

The older our children grow the more I am confronted by just what an awesome responsibility parenting is. So much of our children's beliefs, values, habits, social skills, life skills etc are formed and influenced by us. As home educating parents we have long been aware of this on a theoretical level but now I 'get it' and I don't believe this is exclusive to home education alone. All parents play an enormous role in their children's formation.

On the weekend Princess was finally promoted to the exclusive group of; 'lawnmowers'. Caught a Kodak moment of PC walking alongside her teaching, alas didn't catch the moment with the camera, but I did catch her solo début.

Lots of baking and creating here, I made the most incredibly moist, fluffy and sinfully delicious grain and dairy free double chocolate muffins yesterday. Superb! 5 star rating. This morning I made nut butter with my Champion juicer, too easy! Re-made the banana bread with far better results, adding the bread to our favourites list.

Term 1 resumes next week. Stationary has been purchased, books are ordered and beginning to arrive, the book wrap is standing waiting, lesson plans are finalised, 'to do' lists are printed and children are begging to begin. Well one child is, that counts as plural, yes?

Earlier this week Anna Maria and Carpenter drove to Brisbane for the first time, socialising for three days with friends. One more event to go; a mum and daughters movie night and then we step off this social whirlwind. Oh for normality; weekly swim lessons and karate would have to be easier.

Whole 30, Week 2 - Menu

Sharing our menu from the past week and a bit, in a desire to show how large families or those on a tight budget can eat predominately Primal/Paleo. Once again an incomplete list as, although I began a food diary I didn't maintain it. Be sure to read Angela's Week 3 for more large family ideas too.
* Items on the menu which are not Whole 30 are in italic. Mostly they have been eaten by the non-whole 30ers, not me. Potatoes in particular are still on our menu as we find them difficult for a large family budget to eliminate.

Breakfasts

Orange Juice and handful of almonds (me), weetbix (children) [We had a visiting child and I was uncertain how to approach breakfast]

Beef Stew and Mashed Potatoes. (Discovered a tablespoon of chia seeds to 250ml of boiling water makes a lovely thickener for stews)

We bought a box of bananas and nectarines, although the Whole 30's emphasis is on vegetables not fruit.

Rissoles are like meatballs, but larger and coarser.

2tbs of almond flour (coconut flour might work too)

1 grated Carrot

Tomato Paster or Tomato Sauce (Ketchup)

1 Egg

Seasoning (Parsley, Pepper, Fennel, etc)

Roll into balls and roll through more almond flour.

Pinning it Down - Grain Free Breakfast

Joining in once again with Sarah and Pam as they encourage me to turn my pins into an actual project.

In our endeavour to follow the Whole 30 I have seriously tackled the question of 'what to eat for breakfast?' with a daily menu. As I knew this morning was grain free muffins, it was simply a matter of popping over to my pinterest grain free board last night and making a selection.

At six o'clock this morning I whipped up a couple of dozen muffins and a couple of loaves; Grain Free blueberry and zucchini spice muffins from Organic & Thrifty and Grain Free, Sugar Free Banana Bread from Spoonful of Sugar. So easy.

So what do the taste testers say? PC and I enjoyed the muffins but the children were a little uncertain about the berries. I used mixed as I didn't have enough blueberries.

The spices in the zucchini muffins just popped in your mouth, but they were slightly dry. PC felt they would have been delicious with a cup of tea, alas we're water drinkers here.

The banana bread was the favourite with the children, although slightly oily as I used regular butter not almond butter as per the recipe. I also substituted the flaxseed for coconut flour. I was rather keen on this recipe as it was flourless, so most cost effective.

Creating a Nature Collage

Yesterday evolved into a nature theme. After our nature challenge Jem was keen to enjoy another activity.

We decided on making a nature collage.

We selected various items from the gardens; flowers, seeds, bark, grass, anything that appealed to him.

Once he had his collection gathered

we headed inside to create a masterpiece.

All was needed was a pot of glue, his collection and we had one happy boy.

Trench Digging

When we realised we needed to dig 40metres of trenches for piping; storm water and sewage, hiring a digger was the obvious choice.

When we rang to book the digger the machine was only available between 9am-4pm. The pressure was on. Fortunately as it hadn't rained the digging went more quickly than we estimated.

Prior to taking this tangent we've been building our deck. Decking had come to a halt though as the trench was to intersect through the decking, unless we wished to dig by hand it was time to take a detour. In no time we had two trenches dug.

Whilst PC was on the digger I raced into town for a couple of loads of crusher dust, which was then spread as a base in the trenches.

Next the pipes were laid and joined up

ready for the plumber to come and connect to the outlets.

One trench covered over and the next trench ready.
Satisfying to have one more job completed and crossed off the list. Back to the decking.

Pinning it Down - Backyard Nature Activity

When Sarah first announced that she and Pam were launching a pinning it down linky party I was all excited, just think of all the awesome pics I could share! Then came the kicker, she actually insisted I had to do it!!. I had to actually turn that pin into action and only then could I share.
When this morning Jack Jack declared he wanted to 'do some school' (we're on holidays for two more weeks yet) I instantly knew what we would do.

I've been conscious for some time of the need to spend more time outdoors with the children, reading this article only re-enforced my belief.

Endeavouring to do better, with the aid of this pin, we headed outdoors with egg cartons with each compartment painted a different colour. The challenge was to find natural objects to match each hue.

At first some thought it would be too hard, but with a bit of tenacity they managed quite nicely

and thoroughly enjoyed the challenge.

The girls took off independently on their own, so I was rather keen to see what they would come back with.

Whole 30, Week 1 - Menu

One of the most difficult challenges in changing a diet/lifestyle is the organisation and for a large family it may indeed seem overwhelming. Reading blogs/websites is a wonderful help but many of the recipes/menus are for a family of four, and some food choices would make the costs for a family of eleven or a family on a tight budget incredible. My hope is by sharing the reality it may aid families transitioning or those wanting more ideas. Whilst I am striving to be Whole 30 (and not always succeeding) my family is not yet totally Paleo/Primal. Angela also has a large family and her menus for Week 1 and Week 2 on Whole 30 are interesting and inspirational.

* The items on the menu which are not Whole 30 will be in italic. Mostly they have been eaten by the non-whole 30ers, not me. Potatoes in particular still occur on our menu as we find them difficult for a large family budget to eliminate.

My apologies for an incomplete list as relying on memory rather than a food diary is not the most accurate.

Breakfasts

Vegetable Juice; Carrot, Celery and Beetroot.
Yoghurt and Fruit (Children)
Fruit Smoothies; Orange Juice, Frozen Banana and Peaches.
Omelette; topped with spring onion and tomato
Bacon and Fried Eggs

Lunches
Variety and presentation are key elements in salads, each salad has a slightly different variation, we are also enjoying introducing new foods. Salad choices in the past week include; lettuce, tomato, carrot, capsicum, cucumber, broccoli, green beans, mushroom, radish, baby spinach, red cabbage, white cabbage and red onion.
We never add dressing to our salads, but I did make a French dressing, no-one was keen preferring the unaltered taste of salad.

Leftover Shipwreck Stew with Roasted Bacon Brussel Sprouts and Zucchini and Mashed Potato and Pumpkin. (A huge hit! I just added sliced zucchini in with the brussel sprouts)

BBQ; Sausages, Lamb Chops and Green Salad
Baked Dinner; Roast Lamb with Baked Sweet Potatoes and Potatoes and Green Beans.

* For four meals we had 5 extra teenage boys visiting, I was cooking for 11 boys in total, plus three adults (younger girls were visiting elsewhere.)

We often buy a box or two of fruit per week, although with Whole 30 the emphasis is on vegetables rather than fruit.

Yoghurt in the Slow Cooker

We purchased yoghurt for a Christmas treat and then craved more. At $5 a litre the cost was astronomical, so I began investigating how to make our own. Using these recipes and tips we made a batch up, cost only $3 for 2 litres! Using a slow cooker is so simple, just three basic steps.

Pour 2 litres(.52gal) of milk into slow cooker. Cook on high until temperature reaches 180F. Takes about 2.5 hrs. (You will need a milk thermometer.)
Take off lid and cool until temperature drops to 115F.
Add one cup of yoghurt (containing live cultures) and half a cup of powdered milk. (Too runny otherwise). Place lid back on and towel over the pot, works best to store in cold oven for 10-12hrs.

After our success with cows milk we used the same method to make goats milk yoghurt. All was fine.

We then branched into making frozen yoghurt.

For every litre of milk add half a cup of sugar and store in the fridge for 2 hours.
Then add to your frozen yoghurt machine, run the machine for 20 minutes and then freeze.

Having made cow and goats milk yoghurt I discovered a recipe for coconut milk yoghurt which I may yet try. If you are keen to make soy yoghurt I also found a couple of recipes, although some sites suggested the above process was successful.

Holidays Thus Far

These holidays our teens have had a rather busy social life.

One night they hosted a movie night, inviting the tweens & teens from a couple of families for a sleepover.

Another week the boys hosted their annual LAN party, a two day fest of non stop gaming on their networked computers.

This time we had five extra boys plus our three, so they set up an extra room.

A couple more social events elsewhere and then time to return to our new school year.

You can now find me over at Goodreads, my new Kobo touch has been running hot and I've got lots of books to chat about. Trouble is I'm so busy reading I haven't time to write, but I will.

I had every intention of beginning the Whole 30 Day Challenge, and I have, with a success rate of 99% each day. Despite not being 100% on board I have already lost 3.2kg (7lb) in the last fortnight! More importantly I can see the difference. Honestly I hadn't realised to what extent my extra weight was bothering me until now:):)

PC bought Jack Jack a child size pool cue and his game is really improving. Some of the children totally stun me when they sink ball after ball, and, my game is improving!

This weekend I plan on finishing my lesson planning. I spent today at our learning blog fine tuning and posting, and I'm feeling a keen interest to dig deep into a Geography unit this year, a year long visit to each Continent.

Michelangelo was discussing his Birthday present yesterday. It has become a family tradition to receive an ipod for your 13th, so he was partially hoping, partially assuming come July he would receive one. Then again he casually tossed out with a hopeful grin, "Or maybe I might get an ipad?" Not likely Son!

Most holidays I create lists a mile long and often achieve all sorts of goals. These holidays I have consciously not written lists, nor have I achieved much, but I'm okay with that, I'm relaxing.

We've been rather hit by more devastating news this week. Our electrician lost his wife last week, they were away on holidays when she had a heart attack, she too was only 47 and also left behind teenagers; 16 and 14. In the past 2 months in our town, 3 wives/mothers have died, all 45-47 and all leaving behind children in their early teens to early 20s. Our friend P is rather devastated as he is mates with all three husbands. Please pray for these families.

Our Journey Battling Acne

A major factor of acne is diet, as I shared previously, the skin is an organ of elimination and the toxins inside the body lead to inflammation in the skin resulting in clogged pores, hence acne. To treat acne we must remove the toxins by treating the cause but we can also nurture the skin.

We considered and investigated standard acne creams and antibiotics, but the more we researched the more concerned we became. The consensus was, once begun on this route you had to continue using these harsh bleaching creams which evidences supports it could led to the liver becoming permanently damaged and the long term use of antibiotics could lead to irritable bowel disease. In the conclusion our teen made the decision to try diet and natural skin products. When selecting natural products we are fortunate to have a dear friend who researches extensively and knows what is the best on the market, so we were guided by her.

To help aid internal healing we use Liquid Probiotics, putting in the 'good' bacteria to fight the 'bad' bacteria. This regime really makes a noticeable difference. Multi vitamins for another teen particularly helps. This could be the inclusion of Vitamin D as another sibling feels plenty of sunshine aids in their improvement.

Skin Care consists of the use of Body Scrub and Body Wash regularly, using only a tiny amount lathered on with a sponge. Also we intermittently use a Purifying Mineral Mask, an absolutely brilliant product. We are still uncertain as to how much scarring has occurred but have been using Coconut Oil and Manuka Honey topically with good results.

In the spirit of honesty we confess that our dedication to this regime ebbs and flows, it all takes much work, both the diet and the internal/skin care. So we couldn't say, "it has all improved in x amount of time" as we have added over the months and some months we are less diligent. We can conclude it makes a big difference and we're certain if we were more vigilant we would have faster results. We'd love to hear from readers who are also battling acne and how their journey has unfolded.

Grain Free for Over a Year

It has been over a year since we began on our Primal/Paleo journey, going grain free, sugar and dairy free etc. Our teen the most affected by acne has not eaten grain bread in all that time! You may remember after reading Loren Cordain's Dietary Cure for Acne we embarked on this journey to help rid our teens of acne.

In the beginning we began most enthusiastically, the whole family, all at once. Well some were more enthusiastic than others;) We were eating no processed foods, we were eating real food; plenty of meat, seafood, eggs, lots of vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and omega 3 fats. We weren't eating; white potatoes, grains, sugar, dairy, legumes and omega 6 fats. After a few months some of these food groups began creeping back in, albeit on a small scale, for some family members. A lack of preparation and the expense for a large family were my excuses. However throughout the year the teen the most effected has been very diligent and only eaten grains by error.

Menu planning is essential and at first takes a lot of research and organisation. Dinner meals are the easiest to plan for but you must not only plan meals but plan snacks for hungry, growing children. This I found a challenge and breakfasts. Finding treats for birthdays is difficult, anything that does not contain wheat contains corn. You must thoroughly read labels, after a few months of being very diligent and wondering why the acne was not improving as well as expected, we discovered that the stock cubes being used twice weekly contained wheat! The hardest area for us to eliminate and the first food group to 'sneak' back in was white potatoes. Not only do we love these vegetables, they are cheap. Eliminating dairy was not difficult as we were previously vegans for nine years, hence buying so much more meat does seem very surreal. We have continued being legume free and we still only use Omega 3 fats. (We use Extra Virgin and Extra Light Olive Oil) All our shared meals continue to be grain free, and I'm currently searching for an alternative to sugar for our snacks. Cost is more when you are trying to support two lifestyles, partially real foodsand partially some processed foods, over the year I have been discovering ways in which to bring our expenses down.

Have we met our original intent? When we stick to the Paleo diet then skin improves dramatically. We have discovered different grains affect each teen to varying degrees. One is severely affected by wheat, moderately by rice, corn and oats. Another flares up at oats far quicker than wheat. Dairy and sugar effect to a lesser degree but they still have an impact. As we only ever eliminated potatoes for a few months, the months where we were still unsuspectingly having wheat, we are unsure of the starch effect.

Along the way we also discovered other benefits. When we started this lifestyle I was pregnant with Bass and 38 years old. It was my best pregnancy, I had no heartburn, no lethargy and no mood swings, I was so sang-froid it was hilarious. When I follow the Paleo diet I have far more energy, am calm, lose weight rapidly and my brain is sharp. Angela has asked for company on the Whole 30 Day challenge and I'm joining in. This time I'm focusing on me, and I'll slowly bring the whole family along for the journey as I tweak the areas that need adjusting.

Bass has the beginnings of his first tooth! He is also starting to pull himself up, holding onto the lounge or coffee table. Cute as a button, little red curls and big smiles, he certainly takes all the love showered upon him as his due:)

My mother kindly gifted us a Cuisinart Ice-cream/sorbet/frozen yoghurt maker for Christmas. I successfully made vanilla ice-cream and Michelangelo made a chocolate sorbet. I haven't yet made frozen yoghurt, first I need to make yoghurt. So I'm currently researching yoghurt making techniques/recipes. Any tips, advice?

Does finding any empty plate in the fridge or an empty packet in the pantry really annoy you? It certainly irritates me, talking to my friends I know our children aren't the only ones guilty of this. So what is the deal? How hard is it to dispose of the packet, empty is empty.

PC has been home for a fortnight over the Christmas break, and we've been hard at work on a project (to be revealed next week). With the noise of the saw we were totally bemused by the confidence of this big fella as he lay in the shade watching PC work.

Around our place the kangaroos do come rather close and often into the backyard like this, but still his casualness was surprising. He stayed and watched PC work for over an hour.

Back to School sales are currently on and I confess I'm rather tempted by all those stationery prices. Normally I'm teasing PC because he rather loves stationery supplies, working in an office he appreciates the need for 'good tools'.

This summer we purchased a family Season Pass for the local Swimming Pool and are rather pleased we did. It enables us to enjoy moments like this afternoon, when we drove to town for a swim before tea, only sharing the pool with one other family. Precious moments.

Our teens always have busy social lives in the holidays. Not only have they caught up with their friends at our two annual parties, but have they have hosted visits including a movie night; 3 boys and 3 girls plus our own crew, and we have another couple of rounds of parties to come. Another LAN party and a 'chick flick' movie night. The pool table has also been rather popular.

Happy New Year, 2012

Every New Year for the last three years, I have chosen a Word that helps me focus on an area of importance throughout the year. Glancing back over the words of the last few years I see; Savour/Treasure/Memories and Habits/Self-Discipline, note, two common threads here. I had been thinking 'In the Moment' for 2012 but tonight when I shared my observations about the commonality with my family, Anna Maria asked a thought provoking question. Why did I keep having a similar themed word? Was it that the similar words were a continual area of interest, or do I feel I keep failing to reach my Word goal? PC feels it is the first. I did crazily wonder whether I should chose a focus, outside of my comfort zone, like, Creativity. I shared this possibility with a close friend and she uproariously laughed, and suggested finding a word with clearly defined parameters. With further reflection I decided my Word needs to reflect the current Season of my life. Everyday.

Have you noticed the 'rule of six' in my left sidebar? My 'rule of six' reflects ways in which I wish to nurture my loved ones and ways in which I am nurtured.

On Tuesday, two days after Christmas, our friend Julie passed away in her sleep, losing her medical battle of the last several years. Julie leaves behind her husband Dave and their three children; dd16 and ds' 14 and 12. Please pray for the repose of Julie's soul and for Our Lord to surround Dave and their children with His love. Our hearts are heavy. A new awareness that time is too fleeting.

Remember during the Year of the Priest when many committed to supporting our Priests in extra ways? In our home we were already praying daily for our parish priest and Bishop, and during the Year of the Priest we added prayers for our seminarians and all the priests of our diocese. Even though the Year of the Priest is over, we need to continue to pray daily for our clergy, they need our prayers.

Our combined family Christmas present, pool/air hockey table has been a huge hit! Constantly there is a game in progress, some real talent abounds. Jack Jack (5) is one of the keenest players and is getting quite good.

We've all been enjoying playing, and if my persistence pays off, I may yet win a game. PC and I are rather pleased with the social aspect, makes it easy to kick back and relax and have a yarn over the pool table.

Talking Christmas gifts, did you notice that gorgeous apron I'm modelling? Designed and stitched with love by my darling Anna Maria. If you looked closely you would also see me with a double pack of Tim Tams, yes they are all long eaten. Another son copied seven years of photos onto my external hard drive, a true act of love, particularly when I discovered afterwards, there was a very scary moment when they thought all the photos were lost!!

What I'd really love to tell you about is my new addiction, no not Pinterest, I've already confessed to that one. I love my new Kobo Touch ereader! With a click of the mouse I instantly add to my library. So many books to read. Thank you PC!!!!!

I'm seriously thinking of 'slurping' my blog into blurb books. Perhaps one for each year of blogging. PC says, "Go for it" so I really might.

I pinned some words of wisdom recently. " Don't marry a man unless you would be proud to have a son exactly like him." Some very true words there, and indeed I did think of that prior to marrying my PC, and its true, they are very like him and I couldn't be prouder:)

In our town which is not far from the beach, the majority of the residents move for the six weeks of the school holidays to the beach and spend their Christmas morning in a tent or beach shack.........

Last week I mentioned wanting to read a few wheat free books, I am now adding sugar free books to my wish pile. I Quit Sugar by Sarah Wilson and Sweet Poison: Why Sugar Makes us Fat by David Gillespie. I'm also keen to make Stevia Extract, apparently Stevia can be bought at our local Bunnings store.

I'm currently overhauling our menu. Not only to reflect my re-convictions regard grains and sugars, but in the need to be more cost effective and to honour PC's request for less meat based meals. Day of Discovery has collated an index of blog recipes, and I'm combing through Sarah Wilson, Wellness Mama and Supercharged Foods for ideas too. To be honest I don't really know where to start, too many ideas. Does anyone just want to organise a menu for me?

I'm finally back exercising on my rowing machine. My friend Reb is running 4 kilometres a day and has overhauled her diet including eliminating grains and sugars. She is my inspiration. Last week I spent an hour in a dressing room in front of a full length mirror and I have to say, the mirror was not kind. Wishing my thickening waistline away hasn't worked, I'm now rowing and considering what I eat.

Last weekend PC and I went to garage sales. We found an awesome family Christmas present! As my teens faithfully read my blog I can say no more, except... we're pretty excited:) Talking Christmas presents we only have a couple to buy and a couple to decide on, doing well.

Some years we really seem to have a great Advent Season, and some just don't gel so well, this year is one of those. I feel like I've 'chased my tail' and 'dropped lots of balls' the last fortnight. However I have one week left, so if I am to think positively, there is still time.

PC's bout with pneumonia is drawing to a close. He is back at work full time and has begun working on the extensions again. He is rather tired by the end of the day but doing much better. Now if we could only find out why Einstein has been plagued by a headache for the past five days. He had a massive bout of hay fever and then some flu type symptoms, so it is most likely that, although he does need to see a chiropractor occasionally for alignment issues. It may well be time to have his eyes re-tested too. Five days is rather long.

Carpenter has been working all week as a builder's labourer for a friend, helping him extend his house. Sixteen year old lads thrive on constant physical work, at least Carpenter does. Anna Maria started volunteer work at our branch library this week and absolutely loves it!! But I'm getting ahead of myself, I've promised a post on Anna Maria and her future plans. It is sitting in drafts and will be ready to post tomorrow.

Undertaking Exams

As last week was the conclusion of our school year, the children requested that we have an exam week. Some thought it would be fun and older teens decided taking exams would be a good skill to develop. This meant a bit of planning and research into what to set. In the end our exams consisted of a variety of approaches; a written essay, a purchased exam and online exam/quizzes. As it was a week that included a major Feast Day we didn't test all subjects.

English & Maths - CS Online Schools provided free assessment exams in Maths and English for our 4th grader through to 10th grader. They also offered a writing exam for our 4th and 6th graders. CS is affiliated with a Select school and the exams were not easy.

Reading Ability - K12 Placement Test for the 5 and 7 year olds. Not really needed as I know their ability but they wanted to be tested like the older children

Literature Analysis - Written exam under exam conditions.
Highschoolers: Time: 1hr
Length: 1-2pgs+Marking: You will be marked on cohesion and fluency. Select a recent novel you enjoyed, write title and author.
1.Write an outline of your novel’s plot in bullet form.
2.Select one character from your novel, describe your character and your reaction to him/her.

Literature- Written under exam conditions.
Primary: time- 40min
Write about your favourite character in a book you recently read.
Include title and author, name of character.
What was your character like? Why did you like this character?
Your answer must be at least half a page long.

Spelling - Morrison- McCall Spelling Test

Faith - Friendly Defenders was a fun online quiz. Primary, Level 1, Highschoolers (and Mum and Dad), Level 2. Lots of fun as we all tried to get 100%

Geography - Trivia Plaza has excellent online quizzes which we really enjoyed, lots of fun and laughter. The whole family tried to outdo one another including Mum and Dad.

History - SOTW Te sts. We purchased these comprehensive tests that covered the entire book. We'll be using them in the future as we continue with the books.

School of the Air

Day 11- Monday 29th August

Whilst in Mt Isa I was keen to visit the School of the Air, the educational program in which children who live in remote areas of Australia receive their education. Launched in the1950s, School of the Air is a combination of correspondence lessons and daily class sessions via a telephone network system.

Originally class sessions were via the pedal radio and later a high frequency radio. Since 2002 however, they are via a telephone network system, with the plan to include webcams in the future. For some however this will never be a possibility as geographical isolation will not support the technology. One student hooks up via a satellite phone which is not totally reliable. We saw a photo of this young teenager sitting at a desk in the middle of an open paddock, no trees, no shade listening in with his satellite phone. His Dad is a fencing contractor and they travel throughout the Outback. Not all children are itinerant, many live on Stations, either the Station Owners/Managers children or are children of the Station workers. Some classrooms have children only from one family, some include children from more than one family.

Lessons are mailed out from the School of the Air and supervised by either Mum or a 'Govie' (governess). The bulk of the work is done via correspondence lessons as the class sessions only last for half an hour a day. Currently much time is taken with the mailing back and forth of lessons and the plan is under way to send lessons via discs and utilise more technology via the internet in returning lessons too. This is dependent though on reliable internet and access to printers etc. For some families this will never be possible.

There is a real sense of community fostered amongst the school despite the fact that children live hundreds of square kilometres apart. Within the school a teacher is assigned to several families and endeavours to visit at least once a year, travelling hundreds of kilometres to do so. Each year the families from a geographical area come together for a mini-school, hosted either at a local hall or on a Station. During the week of the mini-school the children enjoy their lessons as well as scouts. Once a year they all come together for a sports day and Graduation. At some time during highschool the children attend boarding school. Some begin in Grade 7, some start later, however the School of the Air is only offered up to Grade 10.

We listened in to a morning lesson of 1st Graders. It was rather incredible to realise that the three children who were chatting lived 800km apart. We listened to a phonics lesson and marvelled at the skill of the teacher to conduct this type of lesson without being able to see her students. As each child was called upon he would identify himself by name before answering the teacher. They did not interrupt and mostly stayed on track as there was really not time to waste. Although we did have a slight glimpse into their daily lives when one boy shared that the sound 'w' made the same sound as the helicopter that he 'helped' his Dad fly in the last cattle muster. The teacher explained that her class size was down as one child was off at the Birdsville Races.

Whilst I was interested to see a glimpse into these children's lives who are taught in a unique method to Australia, for our children it wasn't that interesting, however upon reflection I realised, for our children who are taught by their mother and live in the bush, it really didn't appear that unique. Whilst School of the Air children live in remote locations and therefore their lives are different in that respect, their experience is not that dissimilar to ours.

Afterwards we walked back to my brothers' houses where PC and our older two boys had been helping with renovations. The rest of the morning was spent lazing around playing pool for some, and renovating for others. After lunch older members headed back for more renovation work and the little ones had a quiet afternoon as we finalised preparations for the upcoming Big Day.

To Have and to Hold

Nineteen years ago on this day, I married my beloved. On that day I was madly in love with my best friend.

Today nineteen years later I am still crazily in love with him, though the love has changed, to a deeper, richer love. Love strengthened and forged by years filled with children, love and laughter, trials and triumph. A life packed with family needs, house buildings, career changes, study and so many other challenges. They have been busy years, rich years and definitely blessed years.

Dreams do indeed come true. You can indeed marry your Prince.

I'm collating a wish list of food books I would love to read, oh if only my library had them, I may yet have to purchase some. Angela recommended Good Calories, Bad Calories: Fats, Carbs, and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health by Gary Taubes, Katie recommends Wheat Belly by William Davis MD and Eva suggests Dangerous Grains. They all sound so interesting.

Reading Jennifer's #2 I so see myself. I have just literally spent hours trying to decide what presents to buy our nieces and nephews, adding to and then emptying the shopping cart. Is this the best present, or perhaps this? Sooo hard to make those decisions, perhaps I also need to make a goal regards decision making. Although in my defence it was hard to find Faith books suitable to the under 3s set.

I have to confess I'm a list maker. It helps keep all those scrambled thoughts in my head straight, I do not become overwhelmed and I love the satisfaction of working through my list. Currently our whiteboard sports two long scrolls of paper. One is headed: Christmas Wish List and each child has a space to jot suggestions and ideas. The other is titled: Holiday Achievements and that list is growing too, activities and projects I would like to do in the holidays. Fun times like, breakfast at the beach, and projects such as reclaim the vegie garden. The children have their spaces too to plan.

As our oldest now finishes her studies I reflect back on many areas over the years, an opportunity to ponder and wonder, "What would I do the same/differently if I had my time over?" Oh wait, I do get to do it again;) Tonight I'm thinking about habits, Charlotte Mason had plenty to say about habits, and really I think she was pretty accurate.

We're doing fairly well in regards to Christmas shopping, for the first time ever we bought for half the children back in the July sales. Now we just have to decide what to get the other 4, and find their gifts. Talking present ideas, Pinterest is a great source of finding ideas, type in the search bar, "Christmas Gifts for ....children etc"

Bass is crawling everywhere now, quickly from room to room, still all in commando style. He truly is a happy, gorgeous looking baby. Yeah, I'm totally impartial;)

Celebrating the Feast of St Nicholas

There was much excitement Tuesday morning when the children awoke to find their St Nicholas gifts. Gifts consisting of chocolate coins, candy cane and a book to help them grow in their Faith.

This year we were extra excited as we were to host our first St Nicholas Day party. The party began with the arrival of St Nick himself, heralded by the ringing of his bell.

The children were rather taken with St Nick and happily listened as he regaled them with the story of his life.

Visiting directly from Russia.

Much to the children's delight he distributed candy cane and chocolate coins.

Coins that looked rather extra special.

We had various activities set up around the room and each activity was supervised by four lovely teens. The speculaas men were hugely popular to decorate (my secret wish is to own a St Nicholas cutter). Grain free gingerbread were also popular.

Also popular was the Santa makeover,

turning chocolate Santa Claus' into St Nicholas.

Colouring as always retained its popularity.

Although I had printed out some figures they did not prove as popular, but the older children enjoyed the Ship Game and Word Searches.

The ideas shared at Catholic Cuisine and the St Nicholas Centre are amazing.

A successful day:)

St Barbara's Tower

For several years now we have enjoyed observing the Feast of St Barbara with a chocolate tower and red and white lollies. A custom from the Italian village of Zolli in the Avelino Province of Italy. St Barbara was imprisoned in a tower and the lollies remind us of her purity and martyrdom.

This year Carpenter and Michelangelo took over the design and construction and erected a different style to previous years.

Our children eagerly anticipate this Feast each Advent. Then who could resist a chocolate piñata?:)

An opportunity to eat plenty of chocolate and lollies:) (Ah, yes, I fudged this year and bought only red lollies.)

Receiving this rather made me smile for a couple of reasons; I discovered Blossom's blog, always delighted to meet my readers:) and I realised I do write a variety of posts, sometimes I worry that I must ramble on and bore my readers with the same 'ole, same 'ole.

1. I enjoy writing book reviews, but they take a fair amount of time to write.

It turns out PC has pneumonia! His second time around. Fortunately though, we appear to have caught it in the early stages and he is not as bad as previously, but still, not good. Please keep him in your prayers.

Well we are calling it quits to our official school year here. Next week we plan to enjoy Advent crafts and exams. Our children tell us they'd like to do exams, they think it might be rather fun, so I'm writing exam questions this weekend.

My thoughts have flickered a time or two towards next year's academics. After reading my friend Linda's plans for next year, I've been considering how to ensure more time with my teens. I'm contemplating working 3 days only with my younger crew, leaving 2 full days to extend my teens. Thinking it could work.

Talking education, I've been over at the new Australian National Curriculum having a peek around. Truth to tell I quite like the layout, I don't find it too full of teacherese. I particularly like the 'Achievement Standard' points (click on Curriculum and then grade, look under subject). What I would like to find is all those points in a bullet form layout or a scope and sequence, like this one for maths. Anyone seen this info for all subjects in a simple list form?

It is true, in many ways older children take more emotional energy and time. Very rewarding though.

We have our last swimming lesson next week and are very happy with the progress made this term. Princess loves her squad, and her teacher is most happy with her progress. Jelly Bean can swim 25m in freestyle and backstroke, Jack Jack has grown in confidence and can easily move across the pool with a kickboard.

Boats and Barramundi

Day 10 - Sunday 28th August

We began Sunday by attending Mass with family:) It happened to be World Day of Migrants and Refugees, and as many women and children attended in their national dress it was easily apparent how many different nations are represented in Mt Isa. There were well over 20 different nationalities present that morning. It was a unique and blessed experience to hear the Mass readings read in a couple of different languages, many nations, One Faith.

Afterwards we headed out to Lake Moondarra, a perfect place for a Sunday picnic. The Lake was built by Mt Isa mines in 1956 for the mines use, the largest dam in Australia financed by private enterprise. Now it is also the city's water supply.

A popular spot for boaters, it was surprising to see so many boats on the dam, not what we were expecting in an Outback town. The dam is also a fishers 'paradise', stocked with plenty of Barramundi. Glancing through the car park another obvious Outback acquisition is 4WDs. Everybody in Mt Isa had 4WD's, each seemed flasher and equipped with more gadgets than the previous.

The dam was a tranquil spot to picnic and relax. The children tried to swim but the dam was unattractively full of duckweed and duck lice. The cockspurs were unpopular and painful, our children were finding the need for shoewear in Outback Queensland difficult to accept.

Impressive was the amount of bird life, with a variety of 159 species. We enjoyed lying back and watching the circling kites overhead.

The blokes fired up the 'Barbie', no council gas barbeques here, but an old timber and matches setup.

There were trees to climb so our little ones were happy.

For others the picnic was a chance to relax.

The dam covers an area of 2375 hectares, far more extensive than we could see.

An area that covers both Lake Moondarra and Lake Julius.

After lunch we went for a walk on the top of the wall

and saw yet another angle of the dam and surrounds.

After we left the dam we headed back to town, to the lookout. This cool sign, indicates just how far we really were from anywhere.

Smoke stacks always dominating the landscape.

The children then insisted we take Dad to the water park as he had missed out previously.

He enjoyed climbing on the equipment

and trialled all the 'rides'

and declared they were lots of fun.

Of course an experiement wouldn't be complete without including the kiddie equipment.

No wonder he was just 'plumb tuckered' out.

November - Month of All Souls

In the spirit of fellowship a friend and I have undertaken to meet once a month. Each month our gatherings will have a different focus, we chose to begin with the Church's Monthly Dedications. As we began in November our first focus was The Holy Souls.

The children gathered together and we read parts of Father Philip Tells a Ghost Story (not a favourite as the writing style is long winded). We discussed what The Church Triumphant, Militant and Suffering means and discussed Purgatory and prayer; "It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins."Mach 2:46

We then created notebook pages using a selection of pre-printed pictures and prayers. It was a challenge to find a colouring picture, but I managed to find one.

It took a good search to find gentler images for All Souls, I particularly wanted to illustrate the Church Triumphant etc. I was rather delighted with this image. (The best way to search was in 'images' using Holy Souls.)

Printed and cut were a couple of choices of prayers; the St Gertrude prayer and "Eternal rest grant unto them.."

We also had a couple of suitable cards in the Holy Card box including this Divine Mercy picture.

It was declared a success by all:)

Today heralds the beginning of a new Church Year, ushered in by the First Sunday of Advent. Advent is a time of Expectation, a time to Prepare for the Birth of Christ. As with any major event, a little bit of organisation aids tremendously in success. High on my job list is to paint our front door. Which means we really need to make a decision on what colour to paint the house. I recently spent time searching for ideas in Pinterest and I think we have narrowed the choices down to grey or green. Which rather surprises me as I never pick nuetrals, but this time I have. Green would blend nicely with the bush, grey with the gum trees. We have Heritage Green gutters and primrose (yellow) windows to consider, decisions, decisions.

Talking colours, a certain young lady's whites were washed with a purple top this week and her karate outfit is now pink!! Looking on the bright side, at least it was our teen girl's karate outfit that is now pink and not our teen boy's.

The timber has arrived back, all nicely finished and ready for us to lay the deck and verandah over Christmas (and the months beyond). Very exciting moment.

Last weekend we were determined to sort out our bike situation. Gathering all bikes and frames together, we counted 26! Whilst it is handy to have extras for visitors this seemed a little out of control. We've been assessing the worthwhile and attending to repairs. When finished I think we might place some out on the highway with a "Take Me' sign, apparently all sorts of things are picked up this way. One friend had a toilet picked up this way.

Last week I took advantage of the 40% off sale at Target on storage items. I was thrilled to buy all manner of containers including several of these beauties to house our picture book collection. So easy to tote our 'theme of the week' from library to learning room this way. Really made my week.

Advent starts this Sunday, I'm combing my archives and archives of friends for treasures, finding some real gems. Hopefully I'll be back to post my plans within the week. Over the years we have found a lovely rhythm for Advent and I find myself really looking forward to Advent this year.

Two more weeks till the end of our official school year. We're starting to look towards next year, chronologically we will have an; 11th Grader, 7th Grader and Kindergartener as well as a; 2nd, 5th and 9th grader. I'm thinking strengths and weaknesses, direction and guidance.

The Feast of Christ the King - Celebration and a Notebook

Yesterday we celebrated the Feast of Christ the King. Part of our celebrations included enjoying our simple Crown cake using Elana's Chocolate Chip Banana Cake recipe.

We had been preparing for the Feast in a variety of ways throughout the week preceding. A simple and fun activity was to sew felt crowns. I cut, Princess and Michelangelo sewed, easy:)

We also created another notebook, including a simple colouring for the younger children.

and a more detailed picture for the older children.

We filled in a worksheet (not so popular;) and frustratingly some questions and answers didn't match the readings in our missals.

Jenn's centrepiece is now a yearly tradition.

To further explain the end of the Liturgical Year, we were inspired to colour the liturgical wheel.

Finally after hours of searching and agonising, I've ordered books for the children's gifts for the Feast of St Nicholas. Now I just have to pray they arrive in time. Pretty excited about my choices, fairly certain they will be a hit.

Talking books I'm looking at these maths sites and considering purchasing a few. Jelly Bean is struggling with the concepts of; reading larger numbers, place value, base ten and borrowing. Anyone recommendations of 'must have' titles for this?

We had a major medical scare last weekend, Jem fell off the lounge and sustained concussion. Anna Maria was in charge at the time and did an awesome job!! We are so darn impressed with her, as were the ER nurses, the surgeon and the paediatrician. She dealt with some very scary moments on her own until we returned. His CAT scan came back with the all clear but we spent our first night ever in children's ward. He rather charmed the nurses.

The next few months Jem needs to take it rather quietly with no more hits to the head. He isn't quite himself, he has been rather quieter and more solitary but he still tries to climb. Sunday morning he arrived home from hospital, Sunday afternoon I had to explain to him and Jelly Bean why stacking the bean bags in a tall tower and climbing on top was not a good idea. Wednesday I talked him out of leaping from picnic table to picnic table at the pool. Foolishly in reply to "Why?" I responded, "Because you will have to go back to the hospital." His response was "But I like the doctors". We can but try.

PC and I have all but chosen our bathroom hardware. Ouch!! the price hurts, seriously, $500 for a toilet!!! It kills me, I mean, think about it!

This weekend, armed with Sarah's recommendation, I'm planning on a photo shoot with my darlings. Sarah's photographs have been rather special of late, and if I manage to improve a little I'll be happy. Afterall, my 'subjects' are rather appealing too:)

This year might be the year, the year I finally manage to complete and mail our Christmas newsletter. I only have drafts for the past five years sitting in my Word documents. You never know, hope springs eternal:)

Creating a Rosary Notebook

Towards the end of October after a discussion with our tweens and younger children, we've been enjoying a different approach to our Faith lessons, notebooking. Some ideas are quickly pulled together, some take a little more searching. I thought I'd share here in the desire to help anyone who may be searching for ideas for Faith notebooks too.

As it was October, the Month of the Holy Rosary, we decided that would be our focus. The majority of our notebooking came from That Resource Site, Celebrate the Month of the Holy Rosary, there were many links here we didn't have time to use including beautiful notebooking pages.

The first two notebooking sheets were a Rosary handout sheet that included an overview of the mysteries, of both words and pictures and a snippet of the history of the rosary. For this particular notebook we used paper from Catholic Stationery.

Next we created Rosary mini-books. Mini-books and I have a love-hate relationship but we finally managed to cut and staple.

We then coloured one of Charlotte's lovely colouring pages of Our Lady of the Rosary.
For colouring pictures of the decades of the Rosary visit Jenn for beautiful pictures and links.

We finished with counting and colouring this simple rosary worksheet. (click on image and copy, link is not working at present)
We finally managed to print and laminate The Bookworm's Rosary Three Part Cards. A big hit, and all the children spent time matching pictures, pictures and words and sorting into mysteries.

Other ideas to encourage participation in the Rosary with little ones include Rosary Boxes and Rosary Roses. The older ones may enjoy making a Rosary. A guaranteed hit for the Month of the Holy Rosary would be to make an edible Rosary.

Day 9 - Saturday 27th August

What an incredible sunrise to awake too! Saturday Morning; my brothers, PC and our four eldest awoke in tents on a Cattle Station, an out of Mt Isa.

My brother Chris' microlight is stored in his hanger at the Station (ranch).

Flying his microlight is one of Chris' passions and he undertook a huge effort to own one. To obtain his flying license he travelled thousands of kilometres to the nearest flying school and totalled many flight hours.

Before taking his guests up, Chris took the microlight for a solo test run.

Microlights might look fragile but they are incredibly strong. Australian microlights have an excellent reputation on the world markets for quality and safety.

This runway just makes me chuckle, seriously?
Talking Outback runways, the story of one man's solo trip in his microlight, from Newcastle (NSW) to Arnhem Land(NT), a journey of 4200km (2609miles) is fascinating.

Meanwhile the excitement builds as the passengers await.

Then it was Anna Maria's turn, she needed a little help from her uncle.

The microlights can reach incredible heights.

Looking down on the Station, following along the River. Stations in Outback Australia are huge, and can be thousands of square kilometres in area.

The Homestead consists of the main house and other outbuildings. Often quarters for the station hands as well as sheds.

Many stock yards in North West Queensland are absolutely huge. Most Stations in the area run Braham cattle and the musters (yarding of cattle) are enormous.
Stations in the Gulf Country not only run cattle, but have to deal with native and feral animals. Kangaroos are native, but running feral are goats, pigs and camels too.

They took a run towards Mt Isa, sighting Lake Moondarra in the distance.

Back down the runway.

They took a spin on the bike whilst the kite flights were taking place.

Always love spending time with Uncle Dominic.

The children absolutely LOVED this day, their most memorable and favourite day of the road trip.

Being with Carpenter at 8am on Wednesday when he purchased the newly released Inheritance. He was so thrilled to have the book immediately upon release, and that finally he could read the conclusion.

7 Quick Takes Friday (Vol 99)

Just after 8am Wednesday morning, Carpenter and I were on the doorstep of our local chainstore. We drove in to pick up Inheritance! Carpenter assured me he had been waiting three years for Christopher Paolini to conclude the Inheritance Cycle and he had to have it immediately upon release! All day Wednesday and Thursday he read, finishing by Thursday afternoon. Anna Maria started last night (Thursday) and finished in the wee hours 3am this morning! (Friday). 6 hours to read this mammoth book! Einstein calculated she reads 115 pages per hour!

Last week our four middle children ran in our town's local fun run, our fourth year of participation. Can you believe that I actually ran too!!! Jack Jack was looking a little overwhelmed and we thought he needed support so at the last minute I joined it. Oww!! So darn proud of ~~myself~~ our children. They all acquitted themselves extremely well. Jelly Bean won first place again in Under 8 girls!

Remember my complaints of last week regards google's shared items? My friend Gae has come up with a novel solution, she will host a weekly linky party of shared items:) My plan is to save in feedly, and shared weekly, linking into the sharing party. Regards feedly, I switched over and really love the fact that I can categorise similar blogs, that really appeals to me, I also customised my background colour, so no more white:)

Yesterday I re-wrote our building 'to do' list. Listing every job and its estimated time to completion, allocating weekends to each building task. The list continues past Christmas next year! The most challenging part of my task as Project Manager is to decide which priority; do I want a bathroom first, a deck or electricity? It is not so simple though, as each task effects the next, one has to be completed before the next.

This week I've been pondering about early reading and mathematical abilities. An earlier reader and a later reader will often 'meet' in ability at some stage. I've shared previously, "...all thus far have learnt to read well and by eleven it would be difficult to discern any differences despite the various ages they became readers." Does this 'meeting' though, apply to mathematical aptitude? Will a child who 'clicks' with maths early meet with his peers later? I'm trying to recall if I've read anything on this subject, and reflecting amongst our own children. At five, Jack Jack shows a promising aptitude, he can; tell the time, write numbers to 20, and then 1000 to 7000, can read and understand place values of 1st, 2nd 3rd and so forth. He has learnt all this informally, by osmosis. So I'm pondering, will his mathematical aptitude level with his peers in the future?

It's time to order the children's book gifts for the Feast of St Nicholas. I'm thinking, The Princess and the Kiss for our Princess, and The Squire and the Scroll, but would you give it to a boy or girl? What age? What else should I order for the other children? Thinking, thinking.

Our Saintly Cast

We celebrated All Saints Day with Mass and enjoyed a relaxed afternoon with friends. Shortly before teatime I suggested that the children might like to come dressed as a saint. As we are blessed to have an extensive 'dress up' collection, including miniature 'priestly vestments', this was easily achieved.

A Sheet Closer

Never one to choose ease and speed over the final result, when we decided to 'lift' the eave height on the side verandah, PC set about suspending the ceiling battens from the trusses.

The next step was for the front eave to meet with the side eave. A little difficult to see but the edge pieces are on a slight angle.

Once the edge pieces were in place, with the aid of his faithful helper, Einstein (and our gyprock lifter) PC began sheeting the length.

They settled into a groove and the pace proceeded steadily.

Slowing down to attach the side pieces as they moved along.

Hammering sheets over the whole weekend, PC's neck was very sore by the end.

Looking closely you can see the height difference between the front and side eave. The result is a streamlined finish without losing height spaciousness.

With the eaves now completed we are looking forward to sitting on the verandah, when the decking is laid.

Like others, I'm not happy with the changes to google reader. Too white, too stark but most of all they axed shared items! I loved shared items, used it all the time, not only to 'file' articles for myself, but read shared items of others, finding yet more gems. The only solution I thought was to create yet another board at pinterest;) Which solved my filing, but didn't allow me to share. Now a solution has been shared, (see comment) and I'm off to check out feedly. (Kind of sounds like Feelie in Deltora Quest)

Whilst we are discussing technology, are you happy with your photo software? We were formally with Kodak, and our new camera came with finepix studio. Never happy with Kodak but really dislike finepix. I'd love to hear of fantastic options.

We've spent the past week researching solar options, solar electricity and hot water. We know far more about solar electricity than before, our children have created posters on solar energy. The problem is the length of our house, 22 metres from one end to another; one bathroom at one end, all other wet areas at the other end and the kitchen in the middle. Options and decisions.
Did you know?
Fact 1. After July next year electrical hot water systems will no longer be sold.
Fact 2. Electricity bills are set to rise by 15% next year! more after that.

After sharing last week that Bass was still in 00s, it is apparent that I really need to unpack his 0s this weekend. PC refuses to dress him in 00s any longer, citing cruelty, and I'm afraid I have to concede, it's true, he is too long. Talking Bass, he is belly crawling everywhere! Too, too fast.

What an incredibly busy week we have just experienced. We've been to town nearly every day this week. Swimming lessons twice a week, not arriving home until 7.20pm. We attended Mass for both All Saints and again for All Souls, and had an impromptu visit with a friend:) Yet another day our town celebrated it's annual festival. Of course our two oldest teens are busy coming and going with Tafe, karate twice a week and work. We were so grateful to just enjoy being at home today.

Recently I've had a surge of enthusiasm, clarity and energy. It has just occurred to me why, Bass is past the six month mark and this has always been my experience after six months post-partum, there is a new me:) This is when PC starts warning me that perhaps I'm might be taking too much on;)

Underground Shelter

Day 8 - Friday 26th August
Friday morning we visited the Mt Isa Underground Hospital, built by miners during the 2nd World War. After Darwin was bombed in 1942, Mt Isa who was only producing lead, were fearful they would be the next target.

The Underground Hospital was dug in the hills behind the hospital within15 weeks. All miners volunteered their services, working after their shifts finished at the mines, mostly mining by hand.

Whenever the air raid siren sounded (which sometimes happened a few times a week), all patients would be evacuated to the Underground Hospital.

The Underground Hospital was divided into three 'wards'. Including maternity and babies as well as men.

A number of museum artefacts are displayed in the Hospital as well as the 'wards'.

The Hospital was delightfully cool. We easily understood why after the War, the nurses continued to sleep there between their shifts.

Above ground we toured the Beth Anderson Hospital Museum. A museum devoted to displaying many artefacts from the hospital's earlier years. We were delighted to find the admission fee regarded us as a family despite our size, so welcoming.

We also stopped at 'The Tent House', an example of the homes miners lived in during the 1930s. Using their tent canvas as a frame, they erected fibro around. I can't begin to imagine how stifling hot it would have been in these homes. (The iron roof was part of preservation activity)

The trains in Mt Isa are kilometres long! With the distances to travel, and the heavy mining loads to haul the railways are in frequent use.

Friday afternoon PC, my brothers, Anna Maria and the three oldest boys left to camp at a nearby station. They planned to go up in my brother's micro-light early the next morning. The younger children enjoyed a movie night. Then Chloe and I had a girls night; Thai, wine and chocolate with great girl company. Staying up till the wee hours:)

Re-Discovering our Creativity

This week and last, creativity has flourished in our home. We have set up two centres, art and craft. As we have not focused on the creative arts for a long time we are rather excited that the centres have been greeted with so much enthusiasm.

The craft centre has all craft materials at hand, stored in shelving under the long bench-top, with a hot glue gun ready. Every day the children have been constantly and independently creating:)

The art centre receives more direction. Each day I facilitate a different focus laying out supplies of the better quality materials with a stack of blank paper. One day the focus was soft pastels, the next two days were oil pastels, the next, quality pencils and paper, another advanced colouring books. These centres have been so popular that we have also set up a sewing centre, complete with machine and fabric scraps.

An increase in 'rabbit trails' has also blossomed. With the aid of an origami book, one whole day was devoted to creating boxes, huge, medium and tiny ones just big enough to sit on fingertips. Everyone has been so busy creating that academics are not the main focus at present. Interestingly though, as the level of creativity has increased, the depth and real connections in academics has increased.
Such an exciting time we are having here:)

A Tree Goes to Town

Twenty-two months ago we had many trees on our property logged. Ironbark poles were put aside for our use and we began the laborious process of milling it ourselves.

We stacked the timber to air dry for six months, prior to being taken to the mill to be finished (dressed). Twenty-two months later we returned to the job.

Over the last few weekends we began sorting each stack of timber onto new pallets, grading by length, cutting off split ends as we went.

We had five tall piles of timber to re-stack. A long, hot and tiring job.

One that necessitated 'all hands on deck'. A couple of piles included all the bearers and joists. All cut from red ironbark:)

Several times we have attempted this task but were thwarted by the rains, this month we were determined to conclude the job before more rain made it impossible to get a truck in.

Slowly and steadily the stacks began to take shape and grow,

with lots of help from all our 'team.'

Even the younger children had a part to play, gathering the spacer sticks.
Well done 'team' another great effort, we are so proud of you{}.

Just under 3km(1.86miles) of red ironbark to be smoothed and dressed.

Such a huge feeling of excitement to be at this stage, shortly our timber will return and then we will begin the long process of laying the verandah.

Carpenter stepped on a very deadly snake this afternoon, a baby Eastern Brown. Rather a nerve rattling experience for all. Fortunately he reacted very quickly, went leaping and was not bitten. Thanks be to God!!

Anna Maria has started at her new job, delivering pizzas for a local pizza chain. She really enjoys it. Yes we were a little nervous, she's our girl etc, but she's rather confident about it all.

In my quest of being deliberate about my online time, I've found a secret to more productive blog writing. I have a set plan of what I will write each day (time providing). So on Mondays I plan to write a building post, Tuesdays about our Outback trip, Wednesday's Book Reviews, Musings or... and so forth. I'm writing far more as I am not wasting time deciding what to write about it. I've also had time to reflect prior to sitting down.

A friend has long extolled about the virtues of using coconut oil as a facial moisturiser, frankly it seemed a little.. well.. oily to me. However last night I trialled it and I am enthused!! Drove my family mad exclaiming, "feel it, feel my face, it is so soft, are my wrinkles gone?" Another friend cleared a permanent facial scar after only four days!

Our education this term continues to have a lovely rhytmn, I am really enjoying sharing in the children's learning, such a great place to be in:) Planning to share some pictures soon of what roads we have travelled. (This afternoon we spent time researching and exclaiming over snake pictures;)

Carpenter and Koala decided on karate lessons and are very enthused. A boxing bag now hangs in our dining hall where movements and exercises are demonstrated to us.

Bass has started solids spasmodically, is rolling everywhere across the room, is nearly sitting up and says Mum and Dad. PC laughs at me but I'm still squeezing him into double 00s. Don't grow up too fast little one.

Living in a Little Home

Throughout our married life our homes have consisted of two extremes; very small or very large. We have owned three homes, the first we reinvented and sold (a story for another day), the last two(8 sq metres-Aust) we renovated and then added huge (house size) extensions.

Reflecting on Multiple Mum's deliberatings; sell and buy larger, extend, or to make better use of current space? I thought I'd share some of my thoughts and experiences.

Perhaps you've looked at moving but have decided it is currently best to consolidate financially and re-visit moving in a few years. Perhaps you've considered extending but finances also dictate it is best to wait. Or your current location is not where you really want to stay longer term, perhaps you feel it is not something you wish to undertake, it certainly is not for the faint hearted;) I've travelled this road twice and it is not the best option for all.

Your 'gut' decision at present is to stay as is, but...there seems to be mess constantly, the children keep growing and taking up more space, plus they keep accumulating more 'stuff', everything does not have a home, you are irritated, your husband is irritated and the children are oblivious. You are slowly and surely going 'stark raving crazy.' What to do?

Once you have made this decision to stay for the short/long term duration you need to firmly keep your goal in mind. You also need to keep a firm grip on your attitude, do not surround yourself with people who allow you to host a pity party. Do not visit places that make you dissatisfied, stay away from shops, magazines, anything that contributes to a feeling of dissatisfaction with the path you have discerned. Instead of dwelling on the negatives, focus on the positives of living in a small home. Your family will bond very closely (survival necessitates this;). You learn to: get along with one another, let small irritations go, pick up after yourselves, develop good cleaning routines, deal with behaviours that may slide in a larger home, keep noise to a minimum. These and more are life and relationship skills that are wonderful to develop.

Timing It may appear that as the children are growing rapidly you must have more space now! The bigger they are the more you notice, but it is tolerable, the crunch comes when they develop adult bodies in their tween/teen years and yet I know of families who still make it work then.

Take a good look at how you use your house. Every family uses their space differently, reflecting their own unique family culture. For one family having a kitchen that functions well is important, for another the emphasis may be on the entertainment area, another, easy access to art supplies will be important. Living space will be the most used and the lack of this the most difficult to cope with, you may consider sacrificing a bedroom for living space. Can your room serve more than one purpose? Are you using your house to its best capacity?

Not only consider your rooms but your furniture. Is it big and chunky, taking up more footprint and adding to the feeling of smallness, do you have a dresser with only a couple of drawers? Consider a tall boy with more dressers. Is going to the ceiling an option? Look at the footprint of each item and consider if it is making the best use of what is needed? Can it be taller, wider? Hang hooks behind doors, install shelves around walls higher up. Do you really need that item? Does your child need a desk now? Can you store it, sell it, buy another in a few years when you do need it? Beds, can you look at better options, a sleeping mat, a hammock;)? We've had four children in the one small room a couple of times, once we had bunks, a single (with drawers under) and a trundle. Another time we had a cot size bed in place of the trundle (far easier than a trundle).

Are you a visual person? If so any clutter will really bother you, hang doors and curtains. Go through your home and seriously decluter, asking yourself the hard questions. Am I using this, do I need it, if perhaps not now but in the future (ie baby items) can I store it? I regularly de-clutter as well as do a major purge twice a year during our seasonal cleaning. What habits are you developing in your children? There are many websites devoted to de-cluttering tips, I found Don Aslett's, 'Clutter's Last Stand' extremely helpful. Thoughtfully consider what you bring into the home, perhaps for this season garage sales are not the place for you unless sourcing a particular item. Give particular thought to what gifts you buy, perhaps a ticket to Dreamworld would serve better than a collection of Bratz.
*Disclaimer: Although I know life is simpler without clutter it does creep into our home sometimes.

Storage is a must, invest in good storage boxes/bags, look at every possible area as potential. Store under beds, do you have enough shelving in cupboards? Maximise all wall space, floor to ceiling. How are items stored? Did you know you can fit more towels in if you roll them.

* A couple of tips for those living in 'renovators delights' and on rural properties.
From my friend Reb who with her family of eight, lives in a cabin (5sq feet- Aust ).
-"Don't put things off because it is only temporary, if hooks will make your life easier, hang hooks."
True, when we built our pantry I wondered why I had put up with the cupboard for so long.
- Mine: if possible buy a shipping container, the best storage item we ever bought.

An Oasis in the Desert

Day 7 - Thursday 25th August
Thursday morning 'the boys' enjoyed themselves gutting the kitchen of my brother's rental property. A property of rather eclectic colours, including red skirting boards and purple and green walls. First though the kitchen had to be destroyed. All were thoroughly delighted with their morning's endeavours.

The afternoon saw us walking past the nearby Mt Isa Mines to the new 5 Million dollar Water Park mostly funded by the Mines.

Water tunes that played, fountains that sprang up,

cannons to shoot,

arches to run under,

spray to dodge

the children were enthralled.

We enjoyed hours of fun over the week,

one of our favourite places in Mt Isa.

There was an area for the little ones

although some big children enjoyed the area too.

Of course some 'big children' were needed;)

They ran and played on every item in the park.

With swings for children in wheelchairs.

and for the babies, all were catered for:)

There was also plenty for the older children

and cousins and uncles could be together.

Countdown for Anna Maria's birthday had begun, but never too old to enjoy oneself.

"Have we tried everything?"

A skate path circling the park and a skate area also provided more fun.

This awesome 20 metre double flying fox was hugely popular.

Totally, totally impressive!!

Raindrops Keep Falling

A couple of weeks ago we were most excited to take delivery of two new tanks. 5000UK gallons (22500 litres) each!

When the rains come we will be guaranteed of more than an adequate water supply!

The tanks were quickly unloaded with the help of our three big boys.

The last couple of weeks have seen the children digging holes every afternoon and on the weekends.

The dirt has been utilised in building mounds in front of the 'verandah'. Our hope is to build the ground high enough so we will not have to install railings.

Finally it was time to build the base with crusher dust.

Ramps and rollers were set up, in preparation to push the tank into place.

Time to push, and turn the tank a little and push again.

Steady.. a final check.. and in.

We are eagerly looking forward to a good downpour.

Driving home the other evening with Carpenter at the wheel, we pulled over for an ambulance with flashing sirens. Much to our surprise the ambulance pulled off the road right in front of us, the ambo's leapt out of the vehicle, hurrying to a woman in a phone booth. We watched in total bemusement as she held out her leg for them to look at her.. toe!

Thursday we visited our local art gallery. Once upon a time, years ago, I used to take our older children to the gallery regularly. When I explained to our middles where we were off to, imagine my embarrassment when a tween asked, "Does our town have an art gallery?"

Could anyone suggest their favourite 'how to write an excellent essay' site/resource for upper highschool? Fine tuning is what is going on here at present.

This week our oldest two went rock and roll dancing and thoroughly enjoyed it. Next they attended karate lessons and really enjoyed that too. Now they have a decision to make, which one will they do?

I have been trying something a little different in the kitchen, dehydrating fruit. Apples and pears but pears are the most popular by far, so 'gnaw-ish'. We already use the dehydrator regularly to make teen's grain free breakfast cereal, now we have discovered another possibility, I feel quite excited. Alas one day we shall have to return this borrowed appliance.

A couple of years ago I spent hours entering all the liturgical year books we own into a data base, creating my own liturgical year resource. My intent was that the organising of our books would aid us in reading about different saints on their feast days. Somehow I am not using the data and getting the books off the shelves into our hands. Sarah's enthusiasm cataloguing liturgical books as renewed my enthusiasm. There must be some simple system to ensure I do this. Should I consult the list and put all the books into a basket a week at a time, a month? Some other idea?? How can I make this work?

A Miner's Home

Days 5& 6 - Tuesday & Wednesday, 23rd & 24th August

Our first day in Mt Isa we rested, recovering from our travels. Taking it easy and enjoying the time together with family. To just spend time with two of my brothers and family was precious indeed.

Both 'boys' are renovating homes and were eager to show off their efforts. We were extremely impressed.

On the Wednesday I was honoured to be entrusted with the care of our nephew T and took the four little boys to the nearby park. Whilst I was at the park PC, my brothers, Chloe and our older ones headed over to work on the renovations.

The little boys thoroughly enjoyed their time together and over the week bonded with their small cousin. Since we have come home they talk about him and wonder how long before they go back to visit with T again.

As our primary reason for travelling to Mt Isa was to spend time with family it was wonderful to see cousins bonding.

Treasured time to get to know our nephew T, he is a real darling, very easy going and sweet natured.

The Real McCoy

One item that we mourned, when we moved to this property, that was left behind in our town yard was our clothesline. We were the proud owners of a genuine Hills Hoist. A huge metal and wire clothesline with long arms spanning nearly half our yard. Large enough to hold ample loads of clothes and strong enough to withstand children swinging on it as they swung madly in circles hanging off its arms.

Alas all we were able to purchase for here was a modern Hills Hoist, of the aluminium and plastic lines.

These modern lines are vastly inferior in quality to the old and for the last few years I have regretted not digging up the old Hills Hoist and bringing it with us. Imagine our delight when our local Gumtree offered a genuine clothesline for sale!! Eagerly we purchased this treasure and had it cemented quickly.

It is very satisfying to peg clothes onto tightened wire and not weak plastic coated lines. We will continue to use both lines but our favourite is the Real McCoy.

On the Outer Barcoo

Day 4 - Monday 22nd August
Bright and early we were awake before the sun arose. The plan was to dismantle tents and pack the van before breakfast. Everyone pitched in with a will but it was soon apparent that fitting all our luggage into the van would take far more time than if we had bought the trailer.

Anna Maria walked the younger ones back to the local park, to play on the playground, to run all 'wiggles' out before the long trip ahead. They stopped to buy milk at the supermarket for breakfast. Prior to our trip I had planned and shopped for meals on the road. Muesli and tin fruit for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and BBQs with fried potato chips for tea. When needed we would add small items from local supermarkets, such as milk and fresh sandwich meat, this worked out to be a most economical way to travel. Food certainly was much dearer in Outback Queensland shopping at my own supermarket was a far better option.

After we finished packing we all arrived for breakfast, the children decided to clean their bowls by placing them onto of the park's sprinkler system, an instant dishwasher, producing some laughs. We rolled out of Tambo just before 8am. Carpenter was to drive for a large part of the day, adding hours and experience to his learner's driving log.

Tambo through to Blackall (Pop.1800), the grass was plentiful as we drove through, attractive cattle country dotted with trees. Onto Barcaldine (pop. 1900) where we stopped for morning tea, playing in another park, blade boarding along the footpaths. Huge road trains filled with cattle drove through the town, an intersection of highways. Road trains here were far longer than at home. Whereas we were used to two trailers, sighting three and even four trailer lengths was to become common, by the end of our trip a semi-trailer was to look small. Most impressive was Carpenter's cool in driving past these huge road trains, I admit I was daunted when I took the wheel.

We drove into Longreach(Pop 4700) for lunch. Our intention had been to attend a couple of tourist sights in Longreach; The Stockman's Hall of Fame and the Qantas Museum. However we were to find Longreach quite touristy and over-priced, certainly not easily affordable for a large family. After a family council in which the children declared they were not interested in tourist sights, the decision was made to push on for Winton for the night.

Carpenter now handed over the driving to me and I drove until we took a break at a road side stop for Bass just outside of Winton. As PC drove into Winton (Pop.1000, home of Banjo Patterson) at 4pm we discussed the possibility of continuing on. The children were eager to reach Mt Isa that night, eager to see family and not keen to unpack and re-pack again. As the next town, Cloncurry was 3 hours away we realised tea would be sandwiches by the side of the road. We set out to find a supermarket, but in this small town the best we found was a green grocers with extras. Can you believe a 1kg block of cheese was $16!!!! Back home it was $7, I vowed to never whinge again.

Just before dark we stopped outside of Kynuna (pop 20) at a roadside stop for tea. No parks here but the children managed to run up and down, stretching the 'wiggles'. The grass was not so plentiful here, lots of cattle and plenty of dirt. Very peaceful though, the sunsets in the outback are incredible, an orange horizon. PC chatted to some grey nomads who were settling down in their camper on the side of the road for the night. We had passed many grey nomads(retirees) throughout the day who comprised the bulk of the tourist industry in the Outback. Despite the fact that we could drive for hours without passing a car it was surprising just how many tourists there were in the Outback.

All day the children had been excellent travellers, we had listened to chapters of an audio book, Deltora Quest, they had read, listened to ipods. For the little ones our Travel Directors; Anna Maria and Michelangelo had invested hours into making up bingo games etc and packing colouring books etc. Anna Maria had written and laminated 'I spy' charts of; cattle, kangaroos, caravans etc. (which I promise to share later) We were surprised though in the variety of road kill, the list grew from emus to include; a deer, a pig, birds and many kangaroos. In the distance we also sighted (live) brumbies, camels and a wide variety of birds.

Kynuna through McKinlay (pop 30), the topography changed to hills and sweeping curves. It was disappointing it was dark as we couldn't see the country we were travelling through, however we did see the mice scurrying on the highway and the swooping white owls. We were quite distressed when one flew into us. Onto Cloncury (Pop. 24000), arriving at 9pm, the children were still keen to continue on, PC wasn't tired as he had only begun driving in the late afternoon. We rang my brother's family and discussed arriving that night. Chloe graciously welcomed us and warned us to keep an eye out for cattle on the highway. The night was totally pitch black, with the occasional 4 trailer road-train passing, on the winding hills. PC, an incredible driver, got us to Mt Isa safely.

10.45pm I awoke startled as PC slowed down driving into Mt Isa (pop 23000). Wow, by night what an incredible sight. The lights of the mine gives the town an appearance of stretching onwards. Minutes later we arrived at my brother's glad to have reached the end of our journey and thrilled to begin our time with my brother Chris and his family and my brother Dominic.

Simply Delighted - Stylish Blogger Award

Can you begin to imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered I had been chosen for a 'Stylish Blogger Award' Me! Not only had I been awarded by one blogger but by two! my very dear friend Leanne and a new friend Vicky, both kindred spirits and a source of great inspiration.
Thank you dear friends, although I'm not certain that my name and stylish are synonymous, I'm totally delighted:)

Parents Retreat: A Fresh Look

We were very pleased to begin plastering our room. For many months we have looked at dull gyprock sheets.

Ours was the last bedroom to be plastered

and painted. This was an exciting moment.

Once the slower job of plastering and cornices was done, the application of paint went quickly.

We were then able to move back in.
Every morning we awake and look with pleasure at our room.

Ticks are out in force at present. I'm consistently checking the children of a night as we have found several already. So far all have been discovered on the head, although I found one on my leg!

Bass suffered a yucky case of conjunctivitis this week. All I can marvel over is the healing properties of breastmilk! Really totally awesome!

Yesterday I took Princess, Jelly Bean and Jack Jack to the pool for swimming assessments. I was a little unsure as to how Jack Jack would react as he can be rather timid. Which he was, but to my pleasant surprise he was keener to learn how to swim and willing to tackle his fears. With a teacher sensitive to his personality I'm feeling confident he can make good progress. When I ponder upon it I realise for the last couple of years we haven't swum in the dam much, nor have we had swimming lessons in that time, nor do we have a bath, therefore our younger children have not had alot of water opportunity.

Princess is rather excited today, it is lawn mowing time and she is finally old enough to join the lawn mowing crew. I'm certain the novelty will wear off, but for now she is eager to take her place. She is just awaiting some instruction from Dad.

I've been thinking (and pinning) pretty skirts and pretty aprons. I've even gone so far as to investigate fabrics, so just a mater of time and I may just wipe the dust of the sewing machine and start creating. Hoping anyhow, thinking about it. Talking aprons, Jennifer just wrote an thought provoking piece on the symbolism of aprons.

Can you believe I am actually thinking about Christmas!! Actually wondered about inviting family, though I think I got beaten to the punch there;) Oh well, and I've even starting thinking presents and pinning gift ideas. The truth is, pinterest makes me more organised, yes it's true.

Bonus: We have found a plumbing shop that we like, when I go to their web page I read a spelling/typo error on their main page; Freindly Staff. So distracting, would you or would you not, somehow, politely inform them?

Along the Warrego

Day 3 - Sunday 21st August

We left Toowoomba early Sunday morning, determined to travel as far as possible that day. Heading towards the Channel Country an hour later we drove through Dalby, population 12 000.

As we drove, we marvelled at the vastness of the scenery, acres and acres of endless cropping land.

The irrigation systems were very long, far too large to fit in the camera's view. They were double the length of what I managed to snap.

The land between Dalby and Miles were dotted with huge grain silos. The contents moved by train.

The road continued on over the horizon. Flat, flat land, very different for folks who are used to mountains. Bumpy too, I could easily imagine being a pioneer in a horse and dray, only I daresay my seat springs were more comfortable after all. The Warrego Highway continued like this town after town.

We reached Miles (pop.1160) for morning tea and a good stretch. We were quick to learn an important survival skill when travelling with children. Upon entering town quickly locate a decent park.

We were favourably impressed with the park at Miles, lots of playing equipment for the children, big and little.

The tourist information were friendly and helpful. They added another travel tip; do not drive over dead kangaroos on the road, their bones could easily puncture your fuel tank. Duly noted.

Blade boards and scooters were always kept just under the seat by the back door. First item out, last in. An excellent addition to making everyone happier whilst travelling.

After Miles our plan was to continue on to Roma (Pop. 6000) for lunch. However Bass fell asleep and as every parent knows, when a 4 month old baby sleeps you keep driving. Fortunately I had sandwich makings and was able, with some juggling to make them in the back of the van.

Passing through Roma we continued onto Mitchell, (Pop. 1000) another hundred kms to the West. The landscape was fairly similar to what we had seen all morning, flat, but this was cattle country. We were amazed at the local wildlife, we saw emus, sadly many were dead, this was to become a common sight.

The sight of road kill had by now become quite common; not only emus but kangaroos too. Halfway between Mitchell and Morven we stopped at Mungallala (pop. 50) to attend to Bass, and barefoot we discovered cockspurs! Painful! shoes were needed from here on.

At Morven,(Pop. 270) we re-fueled and left the Warrego Highway, turning North onto the Landsborough Highway. Anna Maria had a turn at driving on this stretch and we rarely saw another vehicle. Late in the afternoon we came to the turn off to Augathella, but decided to push onto Tambo for the night.

We arrived at Tambo(Pop. 350) just before 6pm, a long day. We found a powered tent site ($32 for all of us) and quickly pitched our tents (2 x 4 man) in the fading light. Proving the wisdom of another travel tip; keep torch easily located by the door. We soon found a rhythm in unpacking, with all having various roles.

Surprising was the lack of BBQ facilities at the caravan park, this continued to be our experience, I suppose most guests were travellers and most had caravans. Fortunately the local park had bbq facilites and a wonderful park which the children played on as we cooked tea. We appreciated the shower facilites too, individual ensuites. For some of the children it was their first night sleeping in a tent and they were most excited but it didn't take long for all to be fast asleep.

Found: One Book Stand!

On a recent weekend we made our way to the back of a local op-shop to deposit a box. Afterwards on our way out of the alley we noticed a metal stand at the back of a shop which had recently closed its doors. The stand had obviously been thrown out so PC quickly stopped the car and announced, "That would make a great bookstand." (Isn't he just perfect?:)

We bought it home and loaded it with books, the visual display is rather attractive. Alas the slots are not wide enough for picture books, it houses only chapter books. A great way to entice everyone with hither to unnoticed books. Some would call it strewing;)

A few weeks ago I purchased Startwrite, I'd heard so many glowing reports and the thought of being able to print out copywork sheets was immensely appealing. But...frankly, I am going insane, I can not work out how to use it!! I can't hear the tutorials, I can't get the writing to be dark and I can't paste poems onto the sheet leaving blank lines underneath. Arghh!! Can anyone help, pleaseee?

Talking purchases, PC bought a goodie last week. An industrial vacuum cleaner. The nozzle is attached to the back of the gyprock sander and all the dust is sucked into the bag, best of all I can use it for household use too. This morning I vacuumed a rug and was so impressed with how it looked, I went on to vacuum the floorboards as well.

Princess is still deep in the throes of planning her own birthday party. She has stepped it up a notch and begged to make her own birthday cake, a lovely number ten, iced and coated with coconut and chocolate shavings. A beautiful success.

Not sure what is going on here at present but our younger ones seem to be often bickering and irritating one another. Might be time to look at our daily rhythm and add in some more strenuous physical activity. With Spring here it is an ideal time to re-introduce a daily Nature Walk, that used to be such a pleasure with the older children.

Jack Jack is just devouring any learning challenges at present. He continues to absolutely love All About Spelling and is thriving with his new maths book. I'm realising he is very happy when deeply engaged in learning and far more capable than I thought. He is so proud of himself.

Recently I shared with a relative how I do not find it hard to give up certain types of food if it relates to the better health of my child/ren. However, despite the fact that I know my own health suffers when I am not vigilant with what I eat, I am weak, it is just for me you see, so not so important. As for exercise another neglected area, I make all sorts of justifications, but I have been thinking about exercise and leading by example. Whilst currently (most of) our children are active perhaps by not installing good habits and being a good role model I am affecting their health, albeit in years to come. When I look at my lack of will power regards food and exercise in this manner I begin to see it all in a totally different light.

For some time I have been feeling a need to become once again more intentional in encouraging/directing our children in their reading matter. Then I began stumbling across posts that have re-inspired me; an intentional reading plan and reading themes which reminded me our reading direction in years past. When I read the simplicity of Sarah's progress lists it all fell into place. I just need to simply choose several books suitable to the child's ability based on our current history theme, also choose a faith and science title respectively and display on the book stand:) That simple. Well some may have to be encouraged to actually begin.

A Week of Friendship and Fun

Once again we were blessed to enjoy a week of fun and friendship after camp with the M family. The first night we (19 of us) headed in to watch Carpenter's soccer Grand Final. The first time the M's had watched a soccer game, so a rough grand final was rather a culture shock. With the M's, and two local families; the Rs and Ls, 36 people turned up to support Carpenter, we filled a bleacher! Carpenter began the game on the bench, so when he ran onto the field a roar went up from the stand, "Carpenter!" which was heard from the other side of the field. Carpenter sweetly turned, waved, grinned at his fan club and continued running onto the field. Precious memory.

We awoke that night to discover vomiting children, I succumbed the next morning. It appeared we had bought home a bug from camp:( Eventually half our household (of 19) came down sick. Picture sick people lying moaning, on couches and beds throughout the house. We do know how to entertain our guests;)

As health improved we did become better hosts. The dune buggy was a huge hit.

Linda and Bill enjoyed themselves immensely too:)

Waiting time was long but everyone was happy, as long as they were together there was lots of fun and laughter.

Movie night was popular

Tea time was simply rocking; some nights the R family joined us and then we were cooking for 27. One night the teens broke into an impromptu sing along. Lots of great memories.

Our flautists made time for a 'concert' like last year.

Once again a week of fun and friendship. Countdown begins to next year when the M's will come North again.

Reading Penderwicks at Point Mouette with Michelangelo, Princess and Jelly Bean,

Introducing All About Spelling to all the children. I am particularly delighted with the enthusiasm in which Princess, Jelly Bean and Jack Jack greet this lesson each day.

Earlier in the week Anna Maria and Carpenter went grocery shopping all by themselves. For two teenagers to be capable of shopping for a month's worth of groceries for a family of 11 is, I feel, pretty impressive. We're proud of you guys!

NSW school holidays began this week, however we've begun Term 4 early. Considering the more relaxed pace we enjoyed in August/September we felt it was time to 'knuckle' down. We've had a great week, I'm feeling so confident about this term! I haven't felt this good in a long time:)

I recently read an article on recovering from homeschool burnout that really resounded with me, one sentence has been playing over in my mind; "Whether it’s new curriculum, a fun family project, or a great field trip, find something that you can get enthused about because enthusiasm is contagious." I believe All About Spelling is that 'something' we are enthused about.

Princess is planning for her birthday party, I think she may have a future as an event's planner. On the front of a manilla folder she has taped a title page labelled ' My Party' complete with pictures. Inside reside several pieces of paper folded and headed in columns titled; games, food, guests, who to ring, party theme, and even a diagram of the yard and house, detailed as to where games are to be played.

One gift Princess would really like for her birthday is a long pretty, pink dress, suitable for Church. In our town the only options are Target and Big W, so no success there. Ebay was my next 'port of call', I found a couple of pretty ones but not long. Looks like I'll be sewing next week, I was thinking of making a long peasant style dress, they appear rather trendy at present. Any ideas on sites with easy tutorials?

Regards technology, I joined G Queues this week. At first I was enthused and thought it had great listmaking potential, however I've decided I really prefer my pen and pad and the whiteboard. I've never really caught the fascination of blackberry's and other electronic gadgets. I've decided I'm happy with my tabbed spiral notepad that can be simply toted about in my handbag. What about you? Are you a Paper or Gadget fan?

Bass is now rolling everywhere, he can't be left on the bed anymore. He will soon have to move from the bassinet to the cot, time seems to move too fast.

Visitors to our home instantly realise that books are an integral part of our family culture, as would readers of my blog:) I simply cannot remember a time I have not loved the printed word. Family folklore is, I taught myself to read at the age of 4, this must be true as I remember reading before Kindergarten. Homeschool Camp - 11th Year

A fortnight ago we were blessed to once again enjoy our annual Catholic Home Education camp.

This year we were thrilled to have a large, enthusiastic choir for our annual Confirmation/First Holy Communion Mass.
Our two eldest are in the centre, in the two back rows.

After the Mass (in which two of ours received Sacraments) we celebrated with cake and party.

Each day we enjoyed different activities, this year we visited a local rock pool.

It was such a beautiful, sunny day.

The children were fascinated by the marine life.

Little ones took the opportunity to cool off in the rock pools.

Our days were centred around our Faith, including daily Mass

and daily catechetical talks with our camp chaplain, Fr Rizzo.

We even managed to squeeze in a mother's talk one afternoon (the Dad's had a get together one night)

whilst our capable teens entertained the younger children

and the little ones.

Our nights were full of fun activities including quizes and dancing. Dancing was a new feature this year, organised by our teens and was a very popular hit.

Our last day we enjoyed our annual carnival

With lots of enthusiasm and team spirit.

We finalised the camp with concert night,

featuring a variety of acts, including singing

and skits. Fr Rizzo and Einstein; of course Father, a strong patriot is always quick to tote his flag.

There was lots of time for friendship, and three Australian representatives from 4real were quick to snap a shot:) (Leanne, Linda and myself)

Little Changes, Big Satisfaction

The vast majority of the populace is not destined to hike the Himalayas or trek the Amazon, for most, daily life consists of much of the mundane. Yet our lives weave a rich tapestry and great satisfaction is to be gained for an appreciation of the 'little details' that make up the pattern of our lives. Your child's smile, your husband's wink, the call of kookaburras, the smell of fresh washing, re-organising your linen can all bring great contentment.

This past weekend our world was full of little details that bought great satisfaction. I made good on my plan and deep cleaned the study. One thing led to another and we began moving furniture out to enable the second filing cabinet to migrate from the shed. Our study now boasts two filing cabinets, one for PC's paperwork and one for mine. Both located conveniently near to our desks. All weekend long I sorted and culled paperwork, it is such a wonderful feeling to toss paper! I feel so much lighter:) I now even have a spare drawer to offer PC if he needs room. So successful was that project that I'm next planning to tackle the three bags of memorabilia in the shipping container, that have been collecting for 18 years. Wedding cards, birth cards (not too many as congrats dwindle drastically after baby No. 2) birthday cards, love notes from PC and the children. Thinking on how to store these. Any ideas? I'm vaguely thinking to sort so each child has a pile and then to store in plastic push button envelopes in the filing cabinet. Ideas, thoughts??

After the success with the filing cabinet we found ourselves in Target in the 'organising' aisle. There was a sale on! and so we purchased a huge metal cannister bin for our regular rubbish, and a smaller one for the compost. They look so attractive and neater. Now to find a bin for the recycling
